Can I stuff a 4×4 in the ground, no concrete? Rot?
I’d gravel and grovel the hole, but is it the same resistance as as a .60 or so PT, which BTW is NOT an option?
Hand rail on a semi-commercial bed and breakfast front stairs, central KY ( the Jelly state!) in clay. Upper is mounted in some cool SIMPSON collars I found, a 6×6 plate welded to a 4×4 I.D. Tube 6″ tall..way bad axe for wobble wise gription, getting wapped in 5/4 Ipe to hide the collar.
All to be oil finished.
Nuff info>?

I dunno. Seen lots of IPE hold up for a long time, not just decks either, pallets, boxcar and heavy trailer decking, but never have seen it buried. All these uses are above grade. I have seen some other dense tropical wood, possibly ipe, used for grade stakes, and although they seem slightly more rugged than oak, they certainly didn't last anything like PT. Given your need, I'd probably lean toward safe rather than sorry and use PT and skin it.

The Corkscrew Sanctuary in Collier County , http://tinyurl.com/63gxh, has 3 or 4 miles of boardwalks. As far as I can see every inch of the boardwalk is Ipe including the posts. The State also uses Ipe on boardwalks and as posts. I've seen observation towers with 8" X 8" Ipe posts. They tell me they've tested every product known and Ipe is the most cost effective and lasts the longest.
