I got my first taste of these heavy critters the other day. They are 1 1/4 in. thick, solid cast iron. Once I got over the jitters of a new challenge I think they’re cool. I cut pockets back into the subfloor and epoxyed them in.
Anybody got any tips ? How do you do the balconys?

hey whats up? Armin, Stan? surley you guys are got some savvy on these?
I've never used them, though I did some turned oak newels that I faux finished to imitate cast iron. I would try to find a way to bolt them in. Epoxy is good stuff but you are joining dissimilar materials here and newels get a lot of stress over a very long term. I would want mechanical fasteners too. Straps or through bolts or maybe some long lags through the newels into the framing. If or where I couldn't do that I'd try to box them in with framing surrounding the bases.
