Any ideas on a source for the plastic capping that is usually found on old iron railings? it seems it has been molded to fit, where can I buy this product? also, any alternatives for this? has anybody recapped older iron railings with wood?

If I had a question re. Iron Rails..............
or anything to do with iron, I'd call Hayes Bros Ornamental Iron Works here in Toledo, Oh.
Their number is 419-531-1491. A very long time family business and they are good at what they do and should be forthcoming with information as they are as nice as they are good.

Is not that an anachronism or even could be stretched to an oxymoron ?
Here I went and opened the post thinking someone was doing their own casting or at least welding and grinding....
Hmmmm.. plastic, how about molding on some hot glue?

C'mon now Art... you're dating yourself.
Plastic's been around for a while (like you and me). Some people consider "old" to be 30+ years.
I think it's all relative:
“Put your hand on a hot stove for a minute, and it seems like an hour. Sit with a pretty girl for an hour, and it seems like a minute. THAT'S relativity.”

:-)
LOL.. first things first, I wasnt about to grind and repair welds, and then have em powder coated, if there is no way to get a nice top where your hand rides along.
ravz
Did you call that number?
no one is with him, so he has to date himself.
Slanderous, absolutely slanderous.....
DW says something like that occasionally; of course, 'me and DW' (married 46 years this year) figure we had to get married as neither of us would otherwise never find anyone else as cheap as 'we is' ........
I married my wife for her couch, her sewing machine, and her TV. We still have the couch. When that goes -- who knows??
plastic capping
Straight sections?
This would have been commercial railing. Years ago J.G. Braun out of Chicago use to sell it.
For my forged railings, I have a stair case manufacturer do wood caps. They have the molding cutters for the correct profile.
