Our home has some kind of blown-in insulation; it is behind a layer of tar paper that is covered with cardboard and strapping. I have no idea when it was installed, but the overall look suggests that it is at least 20 or 30 years old. The insulation is a densely packed, white product that has a paper-product feel to it. But when you look closely you can see strands of fiberglass like material in it. Could this be an asbestos product? How do I find out?

Could be, although the time frame is a bit off

Laboratory test is the only way. Check your yellow pages for "environmental services."

Thanks for your suggestion.
The test is inexpensive too. I paid about $25 ten years ago.
Thanks.
JB,
Like Bob said, lab test, but sounds like rockwool to me. Let us know what it turns out to be for real.
