I would like to add a dishwasher drawer to an island yet to be constructed. Several plumbers suggest that an island sink must be included in order to drain the dishwasher. Others have told me that is not necessary but there is a special “drain aerator” that can be installed that does not require a sink with the ‘p’ trap. I don’t know what to do so I would like to hear from some of you that have installed a dishwasher drawer to give me some helpful suggestions. I have done lots of home improvement work but not this. Thanks for your time.

I'm not a plumber, but I've done a lot of plumbing via my plumbers permit. A dishwasher drains into a 1 1/2" P trap normally via a 1 1/4" tailpiece that has a dishwasher sidearm on it. This tailpiece connects at the top with the sink strainer. That is the assembly.
Just put a straight piece of 1 1/4" PVC with a sidearm for a dishwasher into a trap. Connect the top of it to a length of PVC with an interior vent device. You can find these vents under various names at any home depot or hardware store. Connect the trap to a drain. I am assuming that your drain connection will be much too far aware for the vent to work. That is why you need to add an interior venting device. You'll also need a hot water connection, but I assume you are quite aware of that. Give it it's own shutoff.

Thanks for the quick reply. I will assume that you have installed one and it works. I will begin a search for the interior vent. I have a couple of large home improvement stores in town that might have one.
You can do it with a johnson tee & a studor vent "aav" if that is legal in your area.
Personaly I would do it the same way I plumb an island sink using a johnson tee verses a sink is all.
I posted a drawing of this a couple of months ago it's somewhere in the archives I'll see if I can track it down.
Thanks plumbbill. I appreciate the recommendation and will go for the johnson tee and studor vent. I will check with the local inspector for the legality.

Here is the pic of a loop vent just replace the sink with a johson tee
There's really no problem with installing the DW with proper venting -- it's basically like a washing machine. The problem is whether there's a local/state requirement for some sort of visible means to warn you if the drain is clogged.
