Island Hood for extra tall ceiling?

shelternerd | Posted in General Discussion on June 21, 2008 09:38am

I’m doing a fairly modern theme house with all Brushed Nickel hardware and need an island hood for a 12’6″ sloped ceiling where the hood will be intersecting the pitch of the ceiling at an angle. (probably looking for a brushed stainless rectangular chimney) They don’t want glass on the hood. If it was a craftsman style house I’d make it out of copper but I don’t trust myself to make something really crisp and modern looking out of stainless. Has anybody ever had a local shop make up a custom hood chimney extension for a store bought hood? Know of a stock hood that has that long of an extension option?

Any recommendations would be great.

Thanks, we considered it but we've already got an 8" pipe through the roof and wiring for the fan unit and if I can just come up with a chimney extension I can make it work. m------------------

Ours is an industrial hood, 3'x4' footprint, on threaded rod.  Similar ceiling to yours (sloped, 11+' to the bottom of the bar joists).  Ours hangs almost diagonal to the bar joists, made installation interesting.

You need something large to fit that scale.  We find the remote fan ideal.  This was bright orange when I paid $9 at auction, never installed.  Silver automotive paint on it now.  That large, you want a light inside.

    PAHS works.  Bury it.

This is the one we have:

    http://www.selectappliance.com/exec/ce-product/ko_is2336sq-66

Very well built (serious internal frame to hold it), very quiet on the lower speeds, great suction on high, 4 lights.  Looks good too!

That said, 12.5' is a heck of a tall ceiling!  Figure 3' to the counter, 2.5' from counter to bottom of hood (as recommended; we went with 32") and you still have 7' to go.  The max this one will go is 5.5'; I'm not aware of any island hoods that will go much further than that, though it's been a couple of years since I've researched this.

By the way, customer service from Kobe is awesome.  Had a problem with one of the lights - they said it could be one of several things so sent me replacement harness, transformer & light base overnight.  Turned out to be a bad base.

You might think about framing down; will give you a flat surface to connect in as well. That high up in the air no one will notice it anyway, finished nicely.

    Here's ours:

No furring down to flat is not an option it's a 30 x 30 pyramid hip vault ceiling with a huge cupola with electronically operated windows and the whole deal. Lots of incentive to look up. Sounds like I'll be getting a local metal shop to fab up a custom chimney extension.------------------

that would be my reccomendation, local metal shop fabricate something. I would imagine that you know best what will fit/how you want it to look. Take your drawings and ideas to the fabricator and see what his thoughts are.

Jenn Air lists a 36" and a 42" island hood that there are extensions available for that go up to a 12' ceiling when the hood is mounted at 32" above countertop. Those would allow you to just have to custom make a short extension.Model #JXT8142ADS
Model #JXT8136ADSThe only problem I see is that they are both only 650 CFM so you might think about an additional external blower to pull up that distance. (I might be wrong on that and someone will be along shortly to correct me.) Good luck,

Michael, if you do need something fabricated, do you know Bill Flinn up on Orange Grove Road? Now you see this one-eyed midget

            Shouting the word "NOW"

And you say, "For what reason?"

            And he says, "How?"

And you say, "What does this mean?"

And he screams back, "You're a cow

            Give me some milk

            Or else go home"

If he doesn't, I'd bet he knows who can. Also, I believe John Hartley is having some stainless stuff made up. Now you see this one-eyed midget

look for a sheet metal shop that does commercial kitchen work... they work with SS all day everyday...  I would be surprised that you wouldn't come out $$$$ ahead with them vs ordering something from the factory if they even had it....  i've had many hood fabricated and it was always far cheaper than ordering out of a book...
