Hey best of both worlds!
Carhart makes a double kneed-“crap brown” overall with zippers up the side of each leg (i.e.-ventillation), find ’em on sale about $50, if your lucky, although I always feel like the prima donna when I roll onto a site with mine.

Sir,
I too am a fan of traditional carpenter's overalls. Carhart makes a pair with bags in front and plenty of pockets. I think I bought my last pair for about fifty bucks. They can sometines be hard to find, but they last forever.

Okay for the pouches, how about pants? While I have been working in cheap kakies and a blue work shirt, several weeks ago, I purchased a pair of pants with built-in knee pads made by Killer. They are heaven in that the floor is always soft, nails and screws are never under your knees, and if you bump into something, you never hit your knee. As a bonus, they have a heavy pocket on the front that is always accessable and has slots for pencils, etc. as well as a hammer holder (for some reason, I never got used to putting it here) in the traditional place. They may not have tradition, but they have comfort for the body. There is also a vest that attaches with velcro to the belt area - I believe, but I have not bought one yet. They are the crap brown color, but the material is a canvas and seems like it would hold up well. My overall cost was about $60.00, but the next pair will use the same knee pads so the cost drops to about $55.00 - more or less.

P.S. I am leaving town and my computer for another week-end. Could you guys try and not shut down the server this time?
*i have found that a piece of the 1/2" or 1" foam sheathing we use is a joy to work on when on your knees on concrete. I wear overalls until the weather gets hot and humid.....like today....then wear dungarees or short dungarees (must have the hammer loop and folding rule pocket since i hate nail aprons). Cotton t shirt with a pocket is all i wear in summer. In winter denim shirts or flannel
*Dennis,I was brought up on tradition. The old timers took me under their wings. But I'm not inflexable.I'll will miss the old style overalls from "Big Mac" ( J. C. Penneys ) if they really do dicontinue them. I've been wearing them for so long, I don't feel like I'm at work without them.I would like to know where the pants you are talking about are available. If they are made of canvas, they're probabaly too hot for Texas. But I would like to check them out anyway. Big Mac stripes have a double knee, and it really has saved me on blue jeans over the years.I guess the tradition of carpenters in striped overalls is dead or dying. It's a sad thing........Here's to the old timers who came before us. Thanks for teaching us.Ed. Williams
*Ed....I live in louisiana...there is a factory outlet mall in arcadia which carries the striped overalls made by Big Ben. It is called VF factory outlet. There may be one in dallas. Also the carharts have double knees but get hot in this louisiana heat. Ive been using that 1" styrofoam sheathing for my knees....a 30"x30" or so piecs works good

*Hi all: I'm with Ed. grew up in this business and have always worn carpenter overalls with the pouches in front. Have used both the stripped & the white ones. I am on my last pair and am having trouble finding new ones. I can find the "bib" overalls but none with the nail bags. If anyone knows where these are to be found I would really appreciate knowing. Thanks, Ron.
*Ron,Saints Be Praised!!!I thought I was the only one here at Breaktime who still wore the traditional carpenters garb. Here's the deal...JCPenney now owns the "Big Mac" brand name. Big Mac was the original manufacturer of the carpenters express striped overalls with the zip-on nail apron. The overalls that all our forfathers wore for so many years before us.Then they discontinued carrying them in their workwear catalog last fall. No more. Gone. Kaput.70 years down the drain.I wrote an article about this and submitted it to FHB. ( haven't heard squat back from them on this, thank you very much...) I also submitted a copy of the article and a letter to the President of JCPenney about March of this year. His name is:James OesterreicherPO Box 10001Dallas, Texas 75301-0001Being in Dallas, I thought might give me an edge. Who knows?I received a letter back from JCPenneys telling me that they had no intention of doing away with an American tradition and that they were working towards making them available in December of 1999.We'll see.If you and other people from Breaktime would also send letters, that would be greatly appreciated by all of us who still wear the stripes. The man at JCPenney who wrote me back is:Randy RonningPresident of Catalog & DistributionSame address as above.Thanks,Ed. *Thanks Ed: I will write a letter and send it to the address you posted. I appreciate it.Ron
