How much, to be safe? One strip width? Meaning 18 inches up each slope, the crease right down the middle?
How about that with an 18 inch strip lapped on each side, yields about 33 inches up each slope?
Doubled?

The roofer I use does a single 36" strip up a valley, giving 18" per side. He then weaves in the 30lb ASTM felt over that as usual. Just like the old days... except they didn't use I&W in the old days and valleys worked fine then too.
I assume you are not going with a metal valley. I tend to like those better, in copper, but that's just me.
A copper valley with a "w" ridge up the center will go in all, but we are in serious ice and snow country, and need some extra protection.Gene Davis, Davis Housewrights, Inc., Lake Placid, NY
I'm of the mind that you shouldn't have to rely on I&WS to keep a valley from leaking. I use it on re-roofs to protect the house until I get the roof redone, but wouldn't use it on new construction (in the valleys).I'm not green anymore.
Gene,
I am in Ohio.
we use a single strip 36" wide centered in the valley(18"/side)
However---if I was in Lake Placid-------I think lapping an additional strip on each side would be an excellent idea.
Now is the time to do it----you will never regret having done it----but you might regret NOT doing it, LOL

Stephen-
I was just up your way last week. Bought a dump trailer at a factory about 30 miles east of Canton. Excellent deal if you're in the market.I'm not green anymore.
thanks----but nooooothanks
If I had a dump trailer I would have to have somewhere to park it, I would have to insure it, maintain it, load it---or hire someone to load it----not to mention tow it.
My current system works MUCH better for me.
BTW------if you were that close I wish you had let me know----I would love to have had you over for lunch---or meet ya and buy ya lunch somewhere
maybe next time?

Maybe next time. I didn't even think about it until I saw a sign saying "Akron 40 miles". I was pretty much on a mission from God. I made the round trip in about 12 hours. By the same token, let me know if you get down this way. We're gearing up to start a 70+ square copper roof in the next week or two. I think I'm gonna post a journal on this one.
I tried one of those waste disposal companies. What a nightmare. They wanted us to work to their schedule instead of them to ours. We normally use dumpsters, but I often wind up with 3 jobs going at the same time that each generate a p/u truck+ load of trash. Instead of 3 trips to the transfer station, we can only make one.
I often load a trailer up with pans or whatever for the day and deliver it to the job. Disconnect it and whenever the crew leaves, they load trash or anything that needs to come back to the shop and bring it back.I'm not green anymore.
Gene,
I use a full 36" leaving 18" to either side the rip a 36" and apply a half to either side. I don not use felt paper any more I use Gace's roof wrap pruduct. It is worth the extra $ especially where we live.
