does anyone have that field guide book. it looks good but at 60 or 70 dollars i would like some real reviews first. my big concern is it would not be good for building in massachusetts. other books i’ve read have 200 pages on tile roofs and stucco siding. stuff we just don’t see around here.

Hell, that's nothing. I've subscribed to FHB for years and years and years.
I know enough about basements to write a book, and there probably aren't a dozen within 50 miles.

I am sure the gurus here know much more than you will find in this book. That said I think it is a pretty good reference, particularily to show a questioning ho or inspector that what you are doing is good practice. For those of us that are generalists and have not been at it since Noah was hammering on the ark it seems to be pretty decent.
I've been looking through a review copy and am considering buying one myself. How's that for praise? It is not a code book, however. That's another $70 or so any serious builder should spend.
Next thing you know, you'll be going to the JLC live show in Providence. You gonna be in Worcester in Feb?
I never met a tool I didn't like!
I've been to the JLC show several times. I'd like to go this year, but I'm pretty sure I have other commitments. However, Worchester is definitely on the menu. I'm even supposed to do a demonstration on housed-stringer stair construction. Stop by.

Ohh....you weren't supposed to find out.....damn!!!
Well it's just like I figured, you people were talking behind my back hiding stuff from me. Smith and Clifford tried to conceal the fest from me but I eventually found out about that one too.

Rick,
I bought that book and keep it in one of the company trucks. We get into a lot of "discussions" on our jobsite with some of the older tradespersons and I like to pull that book out.
Recently one of our framers felt he could notch a 6 3/4" x 21" x 24' glulam. He was going to notch 11" out of it and set it on a wall, and then put a bearing post underneath. I have a feeling had I not said anything, he would have put the bearing post there. I looked up in the book and then in the manufacturers specs and both mades statements about field notching glulams.
It was just good to have a reference. I think the book is worth it.
