My client wants to “finish” off hip roof attic space and preserve the exposed rough sawn rafters. The rafters are nominal 2 7/8 X 7 7/8. They want a drywall finish between the rafters. Location is NY metro area so insulation is a consideration. I have run through a few options to get some insulation and adaquate venting, yet leave a portion of the rafter exposed, which may include installing ridge vents. I am leaning toward 3″ rigid foam between the rafters spaced 1/2″ off the roof sheathing then sheetrock between the rafters and finish the sheetrock/rafter seam with a small piece of cove.
Building a new roof on top of the existing roof is not an option. Is there another option I am overlooking?
Thanks in advance. Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Instead of cove molding there is a plastic dry wall L bead with a plastic tab that can be torn away after mudding, a much cleaner look.
If they have the $. I would insulate above the decking. Put a layer of visqueen then foam. Run 2x4s parrallel to the rafters which will provide ventilation. Put the 2xs on top of the foam above every rafter. deck and then finish.
If not how about finishing the roof as normal and putting in fake rafters just for looks. Maybe while there away one weekend.
