a renter couldn’t open a bedroom door that the kids were in so he kicked it in. So it’s split pretty good thru the trim and split inside thru the jam, so I’m thinking I can remove the trim, glue and clamp the split wood inside, and add new trim. Any better ideas? I’ve only got a day to repair before new renters arrive.

I take it that the door is okay just the jamb split at the lockset? If that is the case then yes your plan will work unless you are missing some big chuncks of wood and filling it is required then you may just want to replace the one jamb side. Not that filling it is bad it is just your time constraint by the time the glue and filler sets unless you use an epoxy filler, that is if the jamb is painted.

Sounds like you've got the right plan, glue and clamp the jamb for the recommended time, and replace the trim.
If the trim piece(s) isn't broken beyond repair, you might be better off gluing it back together, then touching up the paint after you nail it up. I say that because you know the broken piece will fit properly, without any cutting, if it's put back together correctly.

Don't you just love renters?
Do you have any pictures of the door?
My way of fixing things like this is glueing the mess together and then painting it.
