Does anyone out there in cyberworld know where I could get some info on cabinet design using mixed species of wood such as mixing cherry and maple to make some unique custom dove tail drawers. I asked local guys and was told “Wow your just going to have to play with it” and “That more of a art form than basic kitchen design”. Does anyone make any software that will show the color variances in the species for design purposes? Thanks in advance.

Could you describe what you're going for in more detail Ron? Are you thinking, two colours of wood will show the dovetails more clearly? Are you making a box, with the drawer front applied to it, or is the front piece of the box the drawer front?
As far as the design part goes, the only thing that comes to mind is Johnny Grey's work; English guy, lots of freestanding pieces with colours, etc. There is one book called I think "The Kitchens Of Johnny Grey". May not be what you are after. Any specs you will find at places like NKBA (National Kitchen & Bath Assoc.), KCMA (Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Assoc.), and AWI (Architectural Woodworking Institute) will deal with structural/engineering/quality standards rather than 'subjective' things like 'does that look nice?'. As far as software goes, if I read you correctly any general cad program will do what you want; just assign different colours to the different pieces as you draw them; it will show up when you render the drawing if the program has that capability.
Anyway, elaborate please.

Adrian, wow that was fast.. Im looking for something that resembles high end furniture. The natural woods with the various shades of colors showing off the joinery, moldings ect. Its for a high end kitchen in a fancy neighborhood. (when I drive there I get the feeling someone is going to call the cops to get the riff/ raff outta there)
*Say Ron,Why don't you design it and have a custome shop build them as units then you install them. I'd have the customer deal with the shop directly and just let me know when their ready.
*
Ron; I'm kinda like Batman...you need me, just throw up a silhouette of a potbellied plaid clad booted tradesman with a beer in one hand into the night sky, and I'm there. Not that I look like that, it's just sort of a symbol.
I agree with Ted, sort of; I think I would look for a local furniture maker who would do all the fussing to your requirements. The way things are going, even small local cabinet shops are turning away stuff that is out of their normal product line...hard enough to make a dollar on the stuff they do every day, with out messing around with art. That's what would happen here anyway; a project like this would get turned away by most of the cabinet shops, and end up at my door (as a furnituremaker as well as a cabinetmaker). Then I'd lose a bunch of money making something nice to put in the house of your wealthy client, you'd get all the credit, and I'd keep getting that cold stare from my wife. Just going by historical precedent here, not that I'm bitter.

Adrian, Ted, I think maybe your right about going a furniture maker. When I turnout some fancy work I also get the cold stare with the "how come ours dont look like that" Then sandwiches for dinner

Not me! Man, that's what I live for, the chance to do something out of the ordinary. Where are you at Ron? I'll build 'em.
*jim; that's what I'm saying. The 'real' cabinet shops doing production work (and soon, very very soon, there won't be anything BUT those shops, IMO) don't want to look at anything outside of what they do. And they still make, even if things are going well, the smallest money for the biggest capitalisation in the industry. That's going to leave anything out of the ordinary to the person willing to gamble on making money at a prototype. In some markets, you can charge well for that, and in some, it just will become a thing of the past. Geez, bumming myself out.
*Well pack up your troubles in your old kit bag and come on down here brotherman. We could use a few like you around here.
*
We'll probably make the boxes because they wont be standard height have the moldings made. I we'll
be making the drawers. The drawers well make ourselves also. The doors well have to order, depending on how fancy they want them. Jim weren't you the guy who said in another thread that you have a unisaw that you haven't used yet.
*
Yeah, I'm that guy. I have a big old shaper (5hp) that I don't have room for too. That doesn't stop me from takin' on challenging work though.
*
I know what you mean Jim I enjoy a challenge also. it sure beats the hum drum of everyday life.
