Hi All,
I’m installing kitchen cabinets and the layout calls for the cabinet to the immediate left side of the stove to be 3 seperate units stacked on top of each other and a skin applied to the right side. I’m not crazy about the stove being right against the cabinet like that but it’s not my choice. The woman would like me to tile the backsplash and carry the tile out over the skin side of the stacked cabinet. I’m not crazy about this idea either. Any opinions on whether this is a good idea or a bad one? Is it acceptable to apply tile (4″x 4″) over a cabinet skin? Will wall mastic adhere to a type of wood skin such as the one I’m using? Also, does anyone know of anything I could put up instead of tile on that side of the cabinet, some type of splash guard or something? Just out of curiousity, do you think the heat from the burners could cause the cabinet skin to warp over time? Thanks for ideas.

We had a similar situation. There is available material similar to capping. Size was about 18" x 24". I ordered it from my plumbing supplier. Sorry I just can't remember the name of the stuff. It can be attatched with screws. I just drill several holes, used some of those washers that have a counter sink formation and 3/4 inch screws.
I wouldn't use wall mastic that close to a heat source, as the heat may keep it from curing. Depending on what the cabinets are faced with, tile may not be a feasible option.
I will not ever do a wood cab at less than 15" side to. fireproofing needed, solid material, need three inches to do it in.

Stainless steel splash on cabinet side. Much easier to clean than tile.
