Hi,
I classify myself as an intermediate DIY person. My garage is full of tools (with the exception of a table saw and a nice vice).
I live in S. Florida and with the hurricane damage last year, increasing property taxes, and ridiculously increased home owner’s insurance rates, we are barely scraping together enough money each month to just cover our bills. However, our outdated, cheap kitchen cabinets are falling apart. The venear is peeling off and some of the cabinet bottoms are sagging.
Any recommendations for good prices for decent (not top of the line nor bottom-of-the-line) cabinets?
I was toying with the idea (just in my head), of purchasing inexpensive cabinets (like Craftsmaid) and spending a little more money on a more decent looking full-overlay doors. The doors are what people see anyway, correct? But I am assuming that another manufacturer’s doors would fit a different manufacturer’s cabinet. What do you all think, or do you have another thought?
I realize that I will have to go full-price on the countertops…..
Thank you,
Steve

Have you looked into local cabinet shops?
I know a few around me that can build me simple cabinets at a very fair price. If you were capable of finishing them, having the delivered un-finished would save you some money as well.
You don't need to go full price on the counters. Put on a layer of 3/4 ply and add tile yourself.

If you consider tiled countertops take a look at http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1561580805/103-9785193-5595812?v=glance&n=283155 .
Tile on ply is not recommended there although with the proper thinset some are happy with results.

An excelent book. For a kitchen counter, tile on plywood with thinset actually works well. Worst case, add a layer of 1/4" hardie or that waffle membrane.

Steve,
I might get slammed for this suggestion but here goes .... The Wife and I were at Ikea this morning and I was pretty amazed at the quality of thier stuff considering the price. Just about all of thier cabinets etc are modern design though.
