I heard the floor finisher and installer talking about using “kodak paper” under hardwood flooring instead of felt. Has anyone ever heard of this? What kind of paper exactly? What is the rationale?

I did ask! It wasn't contact or red rosin paper, but Kodak paper--something to do with film. The explanation they gave was confusing at best. First they said it was a vapor barrier of sorts. I replied that it didn't seem right to use a vapor barrier, like poly. Then they backstepped, and said they wouldn't use poly. Well then, why use anything else that is a vapor barrier? Then I got a story about the cost of felt going up so they found alternatives. So, all in all, it didn't make sense, and I did not get a satisfactory answer. Thus, here I am tapping into the collective wisdom of the Breaktime Borg.
I googled..and found it.

Did you find info that mentions it as a flooring paper? Link?
Thanks
nope...just, photo stuff
I had a recycling bus in the past...photo paper was not a commodity.."un useable in a second life"...
I'd say it oughtta be free..or they pay you..it is loaded w/ clay..good and dense, but not what I'd choose first..that clay is like glossy stock..in a mag, don't burn it in a stove, don't capture it in a floor sys.

It went from 4 cents a square foot to 6? Extremely cheap insurance. On 2,000 sf the cost is only $ 80.00. What an excuse. Btw, never heard of the Kodak stuff.

I have a darkroom and using any kind of "Kodak" paper would be astronomical. Red rosin paper gets my vote. You get out of life what you put into it......minus taxes.

I run a large commercial photolab and believe me there's nothing inherent in photo paper which makes it cost effective for that use. But they do make all kinds of other products, maybe they found a use for uncoated film or paper stock?
no accounting for what some fools will use. Maybe they worked at the Kodak plant in Rochester and got the company discount. I flinch every tiome my wife orders more for our printer here.

Well, Kodak does manufacture a lot of papers, and some of them are going out of style as digital photography grows, so maybe your flooring guys got ahold of surplus rolls of photo paper and want to get rid of it under your flooring. If you have a home darkroom maybe you could do something with it!
He said red rosin paper. Its cheap, lets the underside of the flooring breath and helps stop squeaks.
