I am preparing to insulate ext. walls of a small addition to my house. Walls are 2 x 6 and have lots of windows. I live in Maryland where its hot and humid in Summer and mild and humid in Winter. There are so many small spaces to get insulation into that I am wondering about the effectiveness of kraft faced insulation as a vapor barrier. Would I be better off to install un-faced insulation and use a plastic vapor barrier and tape the seems. It sure seems to me that the later process would be less time consuming as well. Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

tim .. when i have the choice i use cellulose..
if i'm using fiberglass.. we use friction fit batts , unfaced and a seperate 6 mil poly vapor barrier / air retarder.....
as you have surmised.. the kraft facing is almost nil in terms of edge barrier...
*HELP WANTED...IN MY RECENTLY PURCHASED 50 YR OLD 2 STORY HOME, THE SEMI USABLE WALK UP ATTIC HAS BEEN INSULATED BY PLACING UNFACED FIBERGLASS INSULATION BETWEEN EACH 2X6 RAFTER AND THE ENTIRE AREA COVERED WITH POLY SHEETING. THE ROOF HAS NO SOFFITS, LET ALONE ANY SOFFIT VENTS BUT DOES HAS 6 CUT IN ROOF VENTS. IS THIS A MOISTURE PROBLEM WAITING TO H APPEN HERE IN WISCONSIN ??
