I didn’t want to hijack the previous question about horizontal railings.. so I moved over here..
I will be building a book shelf in my tower. Right under the walkway that will be used for access to my attic. MY building inspector clearly stated that I couldn’t build a ladder there. Apparently he’d like me to use a step ladder, a rope ladder or some other method of elevating myself into the attic..
I was thinking that the space would then be perfect for a bookshelf.. say paperback sized books? Would I have a fair case? or should I simply wait for the building process to be over before I install my bookshelf?

simply wait .....
that's what I do.
Towers are supposed to have spiral stairs, aren't they?
and a princess.
or a wizard.

Frenchy,
Do you know what his objection is?
Code wise ?
Love the concept of the book case though ;-)
...but a bookshelf can have a library ladder, right?
Would I have a fair case? or should I simply wait for the building process to be over before I install my bookshelf?
As long as it's not a 'stair case" <g>
"Curio Shelving" actually "looks" better on plans & shop drawings; helps 'explain' the fixed shelves of great scantlings than those nearby. Not a bad idea to have "stiles" that stand proud a bit, maybe with a large bead milled in the long exposed edge--not that a lwa-abiding person might use that to slide boxes up into the attic or anything like that. Would just be a decorative edge to set off one's collected knicknacks.
