Hi,
I’m currently building an Arcade Cabinet for a client and it’s my first laminate job. Standard HD laminate over MDF. I’m using a new can of DAP Weldwood Contact Cement on both pieces, applied with a brush. Let it dry for an hour. However, when I join my test pieces the laminate is easy to peel off.
What am I doing wrong?
Close inspection reveals a sort of grain pattern on the laminate – it’s not smooth. Sort of like the grain in wood. It appears as if only the “peaks” are touching the glue on the MDF.
Any ideas? I’m thinking I maybe need a second coat of glue on the laminate?

efix2, Are you sure you are to leave it for an hour? Seems like you may have waited tooo Long.
I roll my cement on with a no-nap roller --seems to go faster and you don't drag it around and ball it up with a roller.
If you can touch the glue and it strings slightly or is mildely tacky you should be able to proceed. Worst case you can reapply right over the first coat(reactivating the glue with fresh glue ) and do no harm.
Never tried MDF for a substrate-Is it compatable with the cement? Could be to smooth for a good "tooth".
Can I place my order now? I like Defender. With the power shot button. Hope it works out for you . Mike
Maybe the mdf is soaking up too much of the glue.

I think the last article i read said to coat the substrate with glue twice to allow for the first coat to soak into the wood.
You may have waited to long to stick it. In the shop we spray all contact & it takes 5 to 7 min. to flash off. If we are on a job site & can't spray, we use 7'' adhesive rollers and wait 20-25 min. depending on the temp./hum.
We usually use Ind. flake or melamine board for the base, but we did a couple of large school jobs using mdf as a base & all was well. Except for lifting it, that stuff is heavy!!!
I forgot to add this in my 1st reply, but check the date on the can, most contact has an unopened shelf life of 1 year. Maybe it has been sitting around to long.
Hi All,
I put a second coat on both sides today and it worked like a charm. Guess we all were right!
