Tomorrow I’d like to start triming a set of stairs but I don’t have the newel posts yet. The stairs are open on the right side, with a landing and a 90 degree turn to the right. I need a landing newel in the inside corner of that 90 degree turn and just about everything will either die into it or be notched around it. Is it possible to start the stairs without that landing newel and add it when it comes in?

Hey SMONCLA...
If at all possible ,install newels first.
Plan b, layout for newels with 3" or whatever template.
Then run your trim, tacking anything running into newels.
Just before you install newels, remove tacks, pull off trim, fit newels, adjust trim to fit into
newels and you're done. You could nail off trim and then notch out for newels but I prefer to
tack and pull. Depends if it's paint grade or stain grade trim...easy to tweek with a caulking
gun if it's paint grade.
Have a good one...
