We’re in the market for a new laser level. Is there a model that can be used to lay out the house and also used to hang suspended ceilings, cabinets, etc. or do you need two different levels? I read a lot of mgf. literature, but it’s hard to tell what’s what. Would appreciate your comments and approx. price of the level you’re using.

Mike - this topic comes up frequently. You might consider searching the archives if you don't get much response. - jb

Mike,
you may see me listed in some of the archives. I just purchased a Robolaser from the tool crib and love it. It's self leveling so is ready to go in seconds and you can see the red dot in full sunlight. However, it only does heights, not angles, like some do. I've used it to build a brick patio requiring a P.T. wood 6x6 frame and to check the slope of a lot a purchased. I simply sat it on a drywall mud bucket in the woods and in 5-10 minutes knew the slope of the lot.

Mike: We have used lasers since 1982. No I'm not an expert on them. Just a couple of thoughts. When you make this investment go self-leveling, visible beam, and spend the extra to get one that will shut off if disturbed. One mistake that does not happen will pay for the tool. There are several very good models today. The good companies rent these. You might rent several different units and compare. Hopes this helps a litle. Ron
*bought a momentum laser and used for less than 6 mos. the thing is only accurate to 3/8" or so and caused problems setting forms. The thing now does not shoot a beam out and will have to be fixed. I am disgusted with it and just spen 700 dollar for a new pentax self leveling regular level. The only two things i liked about the laser was one man operation and using it to level stripping in ceilings. I think i will go back to strings and a helper
