We are adding a lath or shade house attached to the garden shed. We can get a good deal on cedar boards: 3/4″ x 6″ x 8′ and rip them, but the question is, how wide should the lath strips be and how far apart should they be placed?

Hi C Miller,
The lattice size and spacing is cosmetic. In other words, if you see one that you like, simply copy the dimensions. I assume that you are more interested in shade, so the spacing can be quite close, 1/2 inch or as wide the lath.

*your lath dimemsions are determined by several things:the plants that you intend to grow ..the season you want to protect them in..the latitude of your location...the material you are using for your lath..and the distance the lath has to span...if you don't know.. you should ask a knowledgeable person about the type of shade you want for your particular plants..ok.... if it were me.. i would buy 1x4 luan square edge decking and rip it in half (((now you've got 3/4 x 1 & 5/8 )) and i would plan my frame so i had 3 foot spans or maybe 4 foot spans.. and i would space the lath using a piece of it as a block (( the lath would be 1 & 5/8 apart )))my frame would be PT 2x4 with PT 4x6 corner posts and 4x4 intermediate posts... all of the material would be left to weather with no finish...this is the spacing and material i used on the only lath house we built...you could also use 1x4 cedar ripped in half....b but hey, whadda i no?
