I’m leaving today for a training seminar on Lead abatement and asbestos hazards in homes. Be gone for a couple days.
Might make a good thread / discussion so I thought I’d start it now.
Post queations for mew to ask so I can learn more. I’ll try to check back before leaving.

With all that is said about asbestos...
I have open asbestos against some wood framers for a wall that is too close to my furnace flue. This was put there by the Gouverment run gas company that installed my new furnace.
Question: With all that is said about asbestos, why are they still using it? why could they not have insisted I change the studs for metal instead?
P.S. Now I'm afraid to remove it for fear of disturbing it.
Cover it with something like sheetmetal if it bugs you. Or paint it, that will keep the fibers more intact than not. Ignorantly, I think that is a long way from your heart. The guys that died from it were generally working with it like you would with drywall dust. Obviously I don't work for OSHA.
I'll go along with that. Just leave well enough alone. I'll remove it only when I win the big lottery and have the money to redo the basement. Then I'll use metal studs around the furnace.
Booch,
You are right about that. Not only were they working with asbestos everyday but also they smoked. That seemed to be the fatal combination.
Piffin - how much are you paying for this stuff? That is, how much are they making off of this [scam?]. Ask them about the two types of asbestos. From what I gather, there is the needle shaped type (3%) which is dangerous and the pubic-hair shaped (97%) which is not.
There was a school and they took daily asbestos readings of the air. Every Wednesday they had a high level but nothing on the other days. Investigation found that every Tuesday evening the janitors buffed the floors. They told them to stop and that solved the problem.
As for the lead, all I know is that Rembrant used it, it is very opaque and it supposedly tastes sweet.

... down by the stream...
And the Romans used to boil their wine in lead vessles to make it sweeter. Good idea there. One of the final elements of their fall from strength.
I Don't know for sure, but the Romans might have used pubic hair asbestos as a replacement for parmesian cheese too.
No scam mamm, people do die from lead just like they do from carbon monoxide. I get less excited about asbestos, myself. But when customer wants to know if their grandchildren can get hurt by living in this house, I want to know the truth before I answer.
Ten bucks was the cost for an all day seminar, including refreshments and a two inch notebook full of every thing you always wanted to know but were afraid to ask about lead.
Excellence is its own reward!
Where can I get some [asbestos] and how much does it cost?
-Peter
Excellence is its own punishment.
I don't have any asbestos currently, but I do have lead paint chips that I'll let go real cheap.

If the #2 pencil is the most popular, why is it still #2?
If the #2 pencil is the most popular, why is it still #2?
Because #1 IS HARD HEADED.
How about some online resources for lead abatement ......... in reference to painting in particular. Curious too as to the future of lead flashing ........wonder if regulators have a bullseye on it. Thanks John ...... Just out of curiousity were you at an am seminar EBS put on for Integrity windows a few months back?
No - on the window seminar. Did the Anderson / Brosco with Viking Lumber awile back.
Not much concern about lead roof flashings. It seems that most lead collects in the soil in the first couple of inches so it isn't likely to poison the water table. If the dogs water bowl gets filled with roof runnoff or you have carrots grownig at the base of your chimney, you might have a little concern, but the instructor said his flashings are lead and he loses no sleep over it.
I'll do another post later today when I get the stuff out and include links and a summary.
Short version is: work wet, avoid making dust, clean dust up immediately, don't take dust home with you. Children and Painters most at concern.Excellence is its own reward!
Many thanks
Did they cover disposal and enviromental controls (local containment)?
I certified as "lead competant" several years ago and recertified twice since then, but think my certification has now expired. Is all that still required?
Dave
I didn't pay as much attention to certification and paperwork. I understand that when the money comes from fed govt or some states eg. HUD the certification is needed according to three guidlines,
If a child is shown to be affected by lead already
If more than $25,000 govt money in the project
?forget the third already.
I was suffering from information overload by 2:30 PM and the test wasn't until 4:30 I don't think I learned too much more in that last two hours.
There are three agencies involved in lead - at least.
OSHA protecting workers
EPA protecting environment
HUD protecting tenants
Not all three have same rules or priorities.
Disposal can be handled as a homeowner exemption. If you are going directly from the residence to the aproved disposal site, just mist it down to stop fly dust, contain it in plastic (6mil or heavier) and go. Or place in a dumpster on site after being sure that the company knows about the possibility of lead.
This did not cover asbestos. Training there is a whole 'nuthur nut to crack!Excellence is its own reward!

Presume that any house built berfore 1/1/1978 has lead based paints in it unless a licensed inspector certifies otherwise.
I learned that I don't want to use the word "abatement"
That comes into play when you have certain defined dangerous levels or situations and is as expensive as asbestos "abatement" with all the strict controls.
eg. if a child has been found to have specified high levels of lead in the blood from living there, it automatically goes to the abatement level.
Basically, the three rules for handling are:
1.Don't make dust, - use misters and wet scraping to avoid putting it into the air
2.Contain the dust you do nake, - using plastic drops to isolate areas and prevent migration. Use N100 NIOSH masks to protet your own lungs. Wash hands regularly to avoid ingesting it.
3.Remove dust, - Clean up regularly use HEPA filtered vacumns and mop horizontal surfaces.Excellence is its own reward!
