I am doing a renovation, with an addition, to a 200 yr old house. The foundation is a loose stone foundation, two feet thick, with the stone work above grade pointed. I am getting leakage in the new basement. The slab is about 2 feet below the bottom of the old foundation. We pointed the old foundation, below grade, to about three feet away from where new joins old. The new is perpendicular to the old. I back filled to about 1 foot below grade with clean gravel. Grade is away. I think that water is getting in the old foundation and making it’s way into the joining point of the two foundations.
I have thought about using a heavy membrane against the old foundation, back filled with stone, run to the footing drain. Any ideas?

There's essentially no such thing as a leakproof foundation, especially if it's stone. You have to remove the water before it gets there.
