Let’s talk trailers again

ScottMatson | Posted in Tools for Home Building on April 12, 2002 03:50am

I need a new trailer. I went to two dealers. The first had priced a fully loaded, 7×16 Wells Cargo with vents, lights, two ladder racks, spare tire, ramp door in back, swinging side door, electric brakes for all four wheels, gravel guards on front, sides and fenders, E track running on one side, with one channel. This one has 6′ of headroom between the rails. Price was just under $6000.

The second dealer sells Pace and Cargo Mate. I liked the pace. It had a little step inside the side door, I get full headroom, I think it’s 6’6″ throughout (I’m only about 6-4 with my boots on. It had all the options that the Wells Cargo had, except it had four e-tracks instead of one, but no spare tire. It’s priced at $4900.

To me, the Pace is a better trailer because of the headroom and the little step. What I want to know is, should the Wells Cargo be $1000 more because it’s worth that much more, or is it a rip-off? Any of you guys have a Pace trailer? I know plenty have Wells Cargos, I have worked out of one before and liked it.

Alot of the time its the name....  Look at the framing and axles and tires. If they are very similar, go with the cheaper of the two. Make sure you can easily grease the bearings and lock it tight.

Around my neck of the woods, there are companies that make the trailers.  And there are people that have to improt them (per se) and the costs of brining a trailer to sell in your area might jack up the price.

I have a Wells Cargo and think they charge for the name.  I will not buy one again.  They are good trailes, but not worth the extra.

Had a Interstate...Just traded it for a new pace (8' X16' X 6'6")....Love it!!! Got the double doors on the rear. They have different models..I believe the cargomaster had the bomber latch/handle for the curb door. Interstate had ramp door...pain in the #$@# if a t a jobsite and dont have level ground to put it on. Mine got tweaked out of sqaure even with blocks supporting the pads, (Not to mention it gets scratched to hell in the mud) The only thing about the Pace is the floor. Kind of spongy..I went thru and resheeted with 1/2". The double doors on the rear allowed me to go to a shorter trailer since I can use the door to hang all of my air hoses and power cords.Upgraded to led lights. put a panel to it with 220V. 6 circuits

Worth the money..I think I paid too much for what I got with Interstate. Like the above said.. look at roof construction, walls, and AXLE rating. Most are all built the same, but they all have subtle diff. even within their own lineup. Good luck
