A deck I will be building is going to cover 2 basement windows with window wells. The windows are approx. 32″ x 16″ and are not for egress. The owner wants to let light in and have access to clean out the window wells.
The deck frame will be 2 x 12’s perpendicular to the house but I could box it out above the windows.
What have you guys used before? Is there a clear panel or grate of some sort?
Thanks,
Ken

Waaaaay off topic, but when my oldest son was 2, I took him the auto show in Detroit. One of the displays was a clear glass platform held up by vertical pieces of glass. I climbed the platform and set him down, he froze. I dont know what he thought was going on but he wouldnt move off of the vertical support.
I remember reading something that was used on old sailing vessels. Apparently, somekind of glass prism(?) was inserted into the deck. So you have the flat part on the deck where you can step on it and the pointy prismy part was below deck.
Hmmm, are these things even available? I wonder if glass blocks can be used the same way...
Once Mother comes home she will HAVE to choose paint & tiles. The hideous shiny silver wallpaper has been removed!
Awesome idea! http://www.boatdeckprism.com/
I'll bet this would come in handy for lots of places.
(modestly polishing fingernails) Well whaddayaknow, this font of useless trivia has good info sometimes. I actually contributed something to Breaktime!Once Mother comes home she will HAVE to choose paint & tiles. The hideous shiny silver wallpaper has been removed!
That might work.
Thanks,

This may or may not be helpful but facing a similar problem we installed some cool stuff last year from McNichols (sp?)
They called it poltruded fiberglass decking. Basically 1 1/2" I-beams.
They let a lot of light through. Neat shadows below as well. It came in sheets 5'x10' and could span 5'.
I found it. http://www.mcnichols.com/products/grating/pultruded/
Thanks
Hey, if you put in the boat deck prism, you get the added entertainment of watching your guests (if it were a boat) look all over for the light switch! Ha!
Are you sure you don't want to build a boat instead of a deck?
Deck Prisms. http://www.boatdeckprism.com/ here are some examples;

Trust in God, but row away from the rocks.
Use clear lumber
The awful thing is that beauty is mysterious as well as terrible. God and the devil are fighting there, and the battlefield is the heart of man.

You can't get clear lumber any more ;o)Jeff
