I need to get a level transit for small remodels and additions. I do footers through finish.
I’m curious as to your opinions on the new torpedo level lasers. Anyone out there use ’em? I noticed on the package of one that they’re acurate to 1/4″ over 100′. What’s a good David White acurate to?

I've closed a 3,000 foot loop to within 0.007' (<1>
*I bought a PLS5 and will never regret the purchase. I get involved in alot of different areas of consrtruction. Last week I used the PLS5 to level and square footings from the trench, a couple of days later I was laying out walls on a commercial ceiling after the partitions were snapped out on the floor. In the same week I cut porch support posts and checked the back of a cabin for level. The dots are easy to see in daylight and I rarely use my David White transit any more.If you are not familiar with the PLS5, it sends out five laser dots. One goes up, one down(plumb)three others go straight out and to the sides(level)
*I have a Checkpoint laser torpedo (sounds like a Star Trek weapon) and use it basically as a chalkline, not even necessarily level -- and it is handy for that (plus it is neat & can get you shot in NY). For seriously leveling over distance I would use a water level (think cheap). For more money, the optical transit (slow, accurate) or a self-leveling laser (fast, cool).PLS5 $795 PLS3 $495 transit $300 torpedo $100Heck, get a rotating laser and let me come over to play with it!In other words, I wouldn't recommend using the torpedo for critical leveling, the potential inaccuracies would be huge. The dot itself is at least 3/16" across, and then you have to worry about alignment of that dinky vial, whether the level got nudged by something, etc.
*Thanks Guys,I'll shop around for a used optical...Dan
*Dan, think NikonBB
*Mr Bucksnort,I'm thinking, but nothing's happening.Hey Billy, guess what? Yesterday I went to the Homer Despot to check on a few things and as I wandered neer the reconditioned tool cart I spied five orange extruded plastic cases stacked up. "Could it be?" I'd been waiting for those to show up for too long, and there they were. I rifled through them all, chose the nicest components from each box and went home with a brand new Paslode Impulse Framing nailer.Three hundred bucks!locked and loaded,Dan
*You da man, Dan.BB
