Does anyone have a good deterrent to having the license plates on my Expedition stolen on my trip to central Mexico? The last time it happened I was within 100 miles of the border. Are there fasteners out there that are such a pain that they’ll give up on it?

Put it under the front seat...

They left the car?

My thoughts exactly. Our church went down to Guadalajuara (sp?) to remodel a Bible school and three guys who drove down got all their tools, cameras and clothes stolen just over the border.
rent a car at the border
good reply!!!
Like being in the cow pasture. You don't have to be faster than the bull, only faster than your buddy.
If you just make it a bit hard, they'll move on. There are security fasteners available in janitorial catalogs and such. But just torx headed screws would do it, right? Who keeps those screwdrivers in their back pocket?
Or just use small carriage bolts - with the smooth head and square shoulders underneath. Tighten the nuts from behind with a ratcheting box-end wrench.
Or the Mad Max style: some #4 re-bar bent in a U and stuck through the two (overdrilled) holes. Hammer them flat on the backside. Remount the bumper.
Rivets and oversized backer washers..

Dont drive plain and simple or have beater used for that purpose and tack the lplate to the bumper. Be sure to use a utility knife to cut up the tag after you put it on the plate. they take them also and sell them to there primos over here. that is what they wanted anyway more than likely.

Double check your auto insurance first, though. Because of both the increased risk and the decreased recovery, my insurance for theft stops at the border. Yours might, too.
Most of the folks I know park on this side, and rent "in country" after walking over the bridge.
How about running an electrical current through the plates. Nothing like a good zap. Then again, you dont want to piss them off, might do more damage to your car. If you could get it set up though, it would be fun to see the first guy try and take of the plates.

Dan,
Have you got the Mexican Insurance? I got mine at AAA and since the bank is financing my truck I had to get permission from them to drive it to ole Mex.
Be sure to leave yourself some time to handle this paperwork.
Peace,
Martin
Before you cross, take the plates off and tape them to the inside of the windshield and back window. But be sure to lock the doors and roll up the windows.

Hi Dan
Many moons ago I went out with a lady from Mexico. I was driving a car with Mexican plates and watched from the Hotel as someone was removing the plates from my vehicle. Went screaming out to try and talk as to why they were taking off my plates and ran into a block with my limited Spanish. Fortunately for me a local who was passing by and spoke English helped out. It seems that I was illegally parked and instead of issuing a tickets they take your plates to the local Police station and wait for to come and "Reclaim" them after a donation to the "Orphans Fund". I understand it saves on paper!
Cheers
