I live in south carolina where hurricane hugo came through. that was in late 1989. Lots of people got new roofs then and in early 1990.
Now, many people are replacing their asphalt roofs. Are they really worn out so soon or are they confusing roof mold maybe with bad shingles?
Its only been 16 years.

A basic three tab 240# asphalt shingle is a fifteen year product. Time sure flies doesn't it?
Higher heat in the south limits the lifespan to just about the projected. Here in the north, on a north sloping side of a roof, fifteen year shingles often last 28-30 years.
Heavier architectural style shingles are designed to last longer
R U concerned about you own place? Signs of needing replacement other than actual age are :
Curling cupping shingles
Corners breaking offf under foot traffic
Granules missing from surface, especiall in crotch lines
alligatoring cracks
pockmarks - typically from hail damage

ones being replaced seem to be the std 3 tab.mine are arch and are in good shape except one area I walk on where the granules are wearing off
What Pif said pretty much describes it. Here in Mobile, AL (where we've gotten plenty of hurricanes), a 20-year roof will last (w/o problems) for 13-16 years. I just replaced one yesterday that had been on since Hurricane Frederic (1979)...talk about "past their prime"!
Keep in mind, the "__-yr" designation only implies the manufacturers' defect warranty term, not the expected lifespan of the product.Jason Pharez Construction
