How come there’s been next to no discussion on energy conservation with lights in Fine Homebuilding? I just got the Kitchens & Baths issue. Beautiful cabinets, expensive finishes, ingenious solutions to space problems all in evidence. Then you look at the lighting, and the best anyone can come up with is a lighting system using ubiquitous incandescent or halogen “cans”, looking like an inverted aircraft runway, with the occasional highly touted “period” chandelier for effect. I’ve witnessed a blower door test of a new house where the ONLY visible air leakage came through those can lights. With all the money people spend on houses, light fixtures and lighting seem to be the last priority. Water saving toilets, high efficiency furnaces, houses sealed up so tight breaking wind rattles the windows, but cheap energy waster lights. What gives? (And no, I don’t sell lights)
