We have thick deposits of a white crystaline substance with a slight sulfur odor forming inside a new shower drain where the brass drain meets the PVC pipe. This has happened over a period of just a few months since the shower was installed. Any ideas what this could be? Would it have anything to do with the brass reacting with the plastic?

It's something in the water or that you're introducing into the drain. PVC doesn't react with metals.
*Here's one from the archives. No solutions, but a little additional info. You may also want to check out the JLC forum. I thought I remembered a similar thread there with one respondant actually giving the how/why this occurs.
*I saw this in the shower drain at our old house. Wehad extremely hard water there and had installeda water softener. Perhaps it has something to do withthe salts introduced by the softener? It had nothingto do with urinating in the water as mentioned in thearchives.
*Interesting info in the archive posts. We are now noticing the same sulfur odor in the ajoining sink, but haven't yet removed the pop-up to have a look inside. If we find the same crusty substance there, that might throw a new light on the observations in the archives on the subject....We will have to investigate just what materials were used in the weep-hole area under the tile, and what type of grout was used, but if the sink has the same problem I would think the cause would have to have more to do with the water or the fact that we have unlaquered brass fixtures. We have city water, so do not soften it ourselves...Any other thoughts would be appreciated!
