Manual or power floor scraper from your local tool rental...lots of blister fun, but worth the effort.

*Beware of asbestos. Don't use a removal method that makes dust, like sanding.
*If it is on an underlayment a shingle ripper works wonders

I think I have figured out an answer to my own problem. Fingernail polish remover. I am going to buy a bunch of it, put it a spray bottle and spray the paper and glue. Give it a little while to soak in, then grab the scraper and start scraping.

Lynn,
Fingernail polish remover (acetone) is extremely flammable and, in a closed space, this situation could end up with you in the hospital and your house in a heap of ashes. Then, the need to remove the flooring would no longer be a priority. Strongly suggest that you forget that so called "idea" and stick with the proper tool...ie. mechanical floor stripper or shingle removing tool. How about a flat lumber slick that looks like a flat weed hoe with a moderately sharp edge on it?
Environmentally safe too!
