little help w/ router?

Sphere | Posted in Tools for Home Building on August 31, 2004 03:29am

OK, I should know this..BUT..my PC 1729 router is really acting up..soft start is cool, give it a load, it bogs…I have the speed dial at amidships, running a fairly large, 3/4 RAD round over, in a table.

Apply load, it shuts off, ( I taped the kill switch, no help), the dial speed control was kinda sticky, I worked it back and forth, and she comes up to speed, but no guts…

On a dedicted 20amp, 20′ from the breaker..12/2 w/g

I am inclined to think the eletronic moter control ( for soft start/laod) might be shot..any thoughts?

It was living in a bad place for awhile, damp, nasty, dark..but really only has about a hundred or less hours on it..(of three yrs)

Do I really need to use my old Royobi 600 to finish this stuff?  It has been a worker bee forever..the “new” PC was to be the replacement…

basically, I am flummoxed..what gives?

sphere- how hot do the plugs get?? i have taken my routers apart if sat for a while and blown and scrubbed clean with a brass brush especially around the brushes and wire coils. but your case sounds, like your gut assesment is right. those the after market speed dial controls are a crap shooti've fried those things after milling window muntins and after 35-45 hrs they got real lazy the one i had it was a rsco1 with the replaceable fuse. i was replacing the fuse on one everyday and on another everyother day. the third it hit the trash.... f..i..n..i..t..o. go with a very thorough cleaning all the wire connections with a brass brush or a dental tool alone and air or a piece of adhesive fine grit 220 or higher attached to the dental tool, check the replacable fuses (if that the one you have), the plugs. then worst case hit the tool service for a 50$ assesment they'll usually apply to the cost i,ve had portercable routers with out the after market dumoflicky attachments that have lasted for 18-20 years with maybe 1-2 tops service in that time.... oh yeah happy birthday my bro share's your day.......bear

Bear, I din't think to feel the plug..but ya know it's sounds like what ya said..

I'll try again to run somethin, and see if the plug gets hot..

I am not willing to send it away, or tear it apart...I need it now.

Damn, I did do a ton of table work w/ big bits ( sash cope and stick) but geeeze, it's only like 100 hrs. or so....

I think the eles. are FU'd..voltage drop? I MAy have used a long cord in the past..

Thanks, I blew it out w/ air...no change..

Hey, I don't talk Bday, 44 is too old fer that..

good luck ...porter cable makes a good router and they take a beatin' those long bits need a big router the 7538 is what you need for those bits. i cant emphasize that enough there pricey but well worth it. that one got soft start , plunge, anda 10,000- 21,000 rpm built in switch. it's got lottsa 'nads' and heavy so if you have to use it up right it has surprising control but would keep it the router table. the thing weigh's as much as a bowling ball. careful again with those big bits in the under sized router they can be a problem when bogged down and the weak link is the router bit/ collet connection. and.....well ...you know can happen..... so be careful..huh... slainte' bear"expectations are premeditated resentments"
