I am interested in building a living roof system on a client’s new garage. We would like to have a modest pitch, perhaps a 4/12. Location is northern Minnesota. I would like some knowledge of dealing with the membrane and the pitch issues. I’m new to this forum.

welcome,
I'm not new to this forum or to roofs but I am new to "living roof systems"
Do you mean something like a sod roof?

This book covers the subject in great detail: Complete Book Of Cordwood Masonry Housebuilding: The Earthwood Method
The author is Rob Roy and it is available at Amazon. He covers the membrane, need for extra support, et al.
