just an item of interest that perked my attention in this northeast ohio town of 12,000 folks…found in municipal court news among the listing of speeders and such:
Tracy xxx, 532 West Main Rd.,xxx , failure to obtain zoning certificate, five-day jail sentence conditionally suspended, must remove fence/structure by Sept.30.
Anyone else ever heard of a threat of a jail sentence used in illegally putting up a fence?

No but what a great idea. Got a few houses around me that have more than one shed on the lot or violations to property lines etc. Been to a few town meetings (for other reasons, not about zoning laws) and low and behold the owners admit the errors and ask what the fine will be and pay the clerk. Two ,months later the structures are still up.
Typicaly the way that might happen is not for the origional infraction. It is after the owner goes to court, looses their case, and then refuses to comply. The court themn issues an order to comply and when the beligerant owner still refuses, they CAN be picked up for contempt. So the reason for jail time is not the original infractioon but the refusal to recognize the proper authority.
I know - local situations can get out of hand and some authorities overdo it too.
So does this mean I can make the guy next door who keeps planting stuff in my yard and cutting my side yard a cell for a couple days? Hmmmm..
Really, he's okay, it's his wife. She's younger than him and just beats him up from what I can tell. Case in point, a flower bed was planted 3 feet into my yard one day. She 'removed' the property line marker stick while doing it! I mentioned the stick and she offered to put it back, then made some quip about 'giving' me some flowers. I told her to get it out of my yard. Then, on the hotest day of summer she sends the poor old guy out there to move them. Between that and their never tended to barking mutts I rue the day they moved in...

I'll get there... I want to do some solar heat, solar PV, hydro and wind electric stuff on my next place so I'm going to need a little room for the resultant arrays.

I used to work for an architect who had a client receive (suspended) jail time for not paying his bill. They then agreed to a payment plan. If the client was late on even one payment...........to the clink.

We've done away with debtor's prisons. That one must've involved a fraud conviction or some other criminal connection.
I remember a case where a teller at the local (out west) bank got found out for embezzling. She pleaded guilty for a suspended sentence, fired from job and signed payment plan with house as mortgage. If she had misseed a payment the suspended sentence kicked in to provide her a new home and the bank would hold the old one.
Bad part of this is she ended up with a great credit rating!Excellence is its own reward!
Piffin,
I thought I would skip the whole failure to pay on court orders since you have already explained it earlier. Thank God there is no debtors prison.

A couple of years ago a judge near hear (Horseheads, NY) actually put a woman in jail because of a zoning violation.
Something about a pool and fence one or the other didn't have a permit.so he put her in jail.
