Hi All,
I bought a great old log cabin for a song. Only problem is I have to move it! Can Anyone suggest a good labeling method for disassembly and re-assembly of log structures??
Cheers
M.

Post-its?
I cut up milk cartons into squares and secure them to the logs with a roofing nail - use a permanent 'sharpie' to mark the labels (don't save 50c on the bargain pen...)
bottom log is '1' and then the side 'E' (for east, for example) - often the log will be cut for doors or windows - so 1 E (n) is the bottom log on the east side and the northern corner -
and so on -
take full pictures of each side for reference -
Moved about 20 of them. Be redundant in labeling. We used canning lids nailed on 2 places.. ends and side. Things get ripped off and buried in piles and stacking. Plus photo registry.
Are there slatted tapered splits to fill in the chinks?Theyre both supports for logs and backing for chinking..altho better ways to chink now adays.
Measure evrything cuz they mite not have. Was called in to help guy whose was stuck on re-erection.Turns out he made a square foundation but logs werent laid on one.Soon his logs were too short to connect.
One of few kits i ever worked on came from Alpine in Montana.Bringing logs to WV from Montana is liking bring sand to Daytona Beach! but anyway they used sharpies to put big black #s on ends of all logs. Tooks a week with guy with big PC grinder to get them off.
Haha, I drive by Alpine every day. That makes me laugh.
Thanks for the help guys!!!

What mostly everyone said. We generally label one gable end "A", the opposite end "D", the plate walls "B" and ""C". Bottom courses or rounds are "1". The letter/number is written on squares of bristol board with marker and stapled to the end grain.
Make a rough plan view sketch especially if there are more than four walls. And it doesn't hurt to make match marks with an indelible pencil in an inconspicuous place where pairs of logs meet. It always seems that everything fits perfect when a log building is taken down but sometimes they don't want go back together quite so neatly ... must be gremlins at work during transportation ...Joe Bartok
