Angle grinder? There are power carving tools, but doubt you can rent them. If you are careful and use the right chainsaw (being careful it doesn't kick back) I would think an electric chainsaw may work. Maybe a drill with a rasp "bit" would work. I think there are also power chisels.
I used an electric chainsaw to replace two log faces last spring,each replacement was hogged out to about the size of a 3"x8"x5' ,use cedar colored urathane chaulk and screws to go back with the inserts then stained to match.
You need a sharp chain and good footing , I made my cuts about 3" apart and used my framing hammer to knock out the pieces, then a wide chisel to clean up the bottom of the cuts. Took about 5 hours since we had some log ends allready on site.
