I’m having a hard time logging in lately. I get this message:
Seamless Registration Error If you have reached this page, there has been an error. It is possible that your bookmark for Taunton Press that you used to get here has expired and needs to be refreshed. Please click here to login once again at Taunton Press.
I get this message even if I login from Taunton Press’ home page. And when I click here, nothing happens. Do I have a virus? If I use system restore, I can usually get back into Breaktime, but then after a few days, it goes back to the error page.

nah, I've been getting that off and on for the last few days and others here have been having that same difficulty a bit longer still.
I'm think it's all on Taunton's end as they have been tweaking the site of late and thus are rocking the boat.

My suspicion is that MS has sent us a security patch (or we've picked up a virus) that somehow turns off cookies, or sends slightly changed cookie response, which triggers this message. If I go to options, reset my security setting (even though it looks right to start with), and then shut-down/restart the browser, the error message goes away.

No MS software running and I was getting that message a couple of days ago. but not since then..
.
A-holes. Hey every group has to have one. And I have been elected to be the one. I should make that my tagline.
I thought I'd narrowed it down to a bad cookie hand-shake - that implies either MS or Sun changed some code for either us, or Taunton.

PhilGiles,
I also have been having the problem in the last week. For me it only occurs late at nite (After 10 Pm. PST)
I am also suspicious of the cookie handshake though as I had problems with a mail server giving me the same line. Damn, now if computers were as easy for me to understand as Blue Prints are I would be in heavan!! "Poor is not the person who has too little, but the person who craves more."...Seneca

I'm not getting any error messages, but for the past week, or so, I've gotten very few emails telling me that someone has posted in a thread I've subscribed to.
I used to get a few every day, and I've only gotten a couple in the past week, or so.
If I could figure out how this happens, maybe I could use it to cut down on the 40-50 spam emails I get every day. - lol
I had the same problem a while back, when they upgraded the Breaktime web site. It was because I had a non standard character in my account login which used to work until the site uprade by Taunton. I finally figured it out and things were fine. When the site started doing the same thing yesterday, I looked to see if anythng had changed, or if there were problems with Safari versus Firefox. Nothing, so i figured it was the site. Now I can get back on, no problem.jose
My experience dovetails with dovetail's. Same time frame too.
Hi,
I'm on Compuserve and recently got messages from Taunton when I log on that my browser will not accept cookies and I can't get in. Since I haven't changed anything, the browser is set to accept cookies etc, Taounton must have changed their site somehow. I can get to the Forum using Internet Explorer but not Compuserve 2000 Version 7. Messy, but it is a work arround
Apparently Sun updated JAVA recently (I've been getting a raft of messages to wait while java applets are being updated), my son sheepishly admits that he okayed a java upgrade from his media play-back software.

Phil,
Ah yes the joys of sharing computers... That may be whats happening here.

I don't share and mine's been messing up too. Also I installed the Java update. Other things are not working properrly, my firewall says I need to reboot for recent updates to take effect, but it says that even after rebooting.
Those updates require a full power-down (ie. "turn off" and not "restart"), you should have a little yellow shield over the "turn off" icon and a little yellow shield with an exclamation point in it in the tray.
AND it still may not work, in which case you have to click on the yellow shield; custom install, uncheck the ones you don't need run the install; power down the machine; power back up in safe mode, run an install; see where you are. Earlier this year I got so many updates that I went through this cycle 37 times one weekend to clear the backlog.

Thanks, powered down, and restarted, everythings OK.
My automatic update Icon was indicating I needed a security update. Installed it over and over, but it kept saying I needed to restart to take effect. So I "restart" over and over. No go. Now that's OK too.
Much as I'd like to, can't blame M$, at least not on the user end. I get it on Linux/Netscape.

Well, I asked a couple of my old staff; they too that prospero is sending an illegal cookie, expecting a cookie that your spyware software has removed, or, are taking too long to process the cookie. Of course, it could just be an error in their code, but my guys think it's a little bit more obscure than that (??).
Minority opinion is that Sun has changed their Java stuff, old can't talk to new, and prospero has applied a patch.
PS, my "reset" no longer works and I can't logon after 9:55PM

Well, whatever it is, it isn't a software change on this end, and it affects multiple platforms -- my W2K/Internet Exploder laptop can't even connect, while this Linux/Netscape box does OK about 75 % of the time. But even with this box, if I use my old shortcut (login.prospero.com) I get a "too many redirections" popup message (whatever the heck that means), though a new shortcut (forums.taunton.com) gets through usually.

BTW, there's no spyware software on this box, so that's not the problem.

(And I haven't changed any code on this box in about 5 years.)

I have been having this same problem -- with the same error message -- for the past week.
However, it only happens after midnight -- and it does the same with Knots.
I've tried Firefox, Safari, and another browser I use occasionally (Camino). Nothing works.
In my case I cannot get into Knots or BT at all, even if I try the live link to "login".
I sent an email to the administrator a few days ago, but never got a response.

Yeah, I've been getting the same thing. I thought it was just my ancient, creaky Linux/Netscape lashup.
Me too. Testing seems to point toward a prospero "uh oh" with hints of dial-up time out issues.
Whole site timed out on me when i was going to gripe about the rain delay at Darlington.
Just PITA.

Hey Folks,
Yes the problem was on our end (Taunton side of things)we finally identified the exact cause yesterday and put a patch out late last night. We made some changes to our registration system last week and this was a result of that. So the problem should now be resolved. If you continue to have login issues please email our customer service folks so that they can log the issue and report it to use web folks.
Sorry for any inconvenience this might have caused.
