long drill bits with quick connect?

Fonzie777 | Posted in Tools for Home Building on October 4, 2014 09:32am

Does anybody know a source for long drill bits (about 6 inch) with quick connect so they can be used in the impact?

I am wanting some twist drill bits about 6 inches long that range from about 3/32 to 1/4 to use in the impact because of the extra speed; for example, drilling back in electrical boxes.

I have 6 inch aircraft bits for the regular drill but I'm surprised I can't find them with the quick connect.

I would imagine that they're hard to find because that's an awfully thin bit to use in an impact, especially given the length.

        might be right about that

That could be the reason Dan - never thought of that.   I'm still thinking they would work good though - just 2 inches longer than the ones you can get in a cheap set for about 7 $.

You may be right.  A straight bit screwdriver doesn't hold up too well.

        I have a 9/64 bit in a con-drive that works.  It's about 5 inches long.

Yeah, it's fairly often the case that some "odd" tool combo would be quite handy for certain situations, but, since it's "odd", no one makes pieces that will fit together (even though the basic pieces are available individually, in incompatible form).

See if they can be custom made.

See if any company will custom make them.  Here's one: http://www.advantage-drillbits.com/hex-shank-14-quick-release

There has to be a market for them.  I couldn't find any online.

    GREAT IDEA!!!

I never thought of that.  I have some old countersink bits - I can even grind the countersink off and make a flat spot on the drill bits - maybe some threadlock. I'm planning on trying that.

      snappy

Snappy makes1/4-inch hex chucks for diffferent diameter standard bits. 1/16 to 1/4 by 32nds for sure.  Maybe other diameters.

McFeely's, and Amazon have them, and there are undoubtably other sources.

But, I'll again warn you that using standard drill bits in an impact driver can cause the bit to crystalize, and fracture, sending shards of steel flying several feet.  If you do use standard bits, be sure to wear eye protection at all times.

        BETTER YET!

I just bought a set on Ebay for 29.00.  It looks like a great idea - collets rather than a screw holding the bit in.  I didn't know these existed.

Review them after you use them.

After you have used them please post a review in the tools threads.  I'm curious about how well they work.

            planning to do that

I plan to do that.  It will take some time to really see how they hold up, so it will probably be a while.  The claim is to keep the bits perfectly centered and not slip.  That may not apply to an impact driver.

            SNAPPY ADAPTORS

Sorry I was so long getting back on this.  I really like these Snappy bit holders.  I only had one slip once drilling birch.  They are so handy just as they come I've only put one long bit in (the smallest holder).

One thing I don't like is I don't have any way to hold them in an index and keep track of the special nut.  I need my wife to make a holder.  Otherwise I'm really happy with them and the additional speed (drilling with the impact) is great.

I don't know of any long bits, but there are quick-connect extensions.

I use a 6" extension often, with both ordinary twist bits, as well as with Irwin Speed-Bor Max "auger" bits.

I have yet to have any bits break while using an extension in the impact. I have damaged many long bits when used in an ordinary drill.

Need deeper? Use a pair of 6" extensions.

Now ... why would you need such? I need it mostoften when drilling down from the attic, into a wall cavity. Very often I have three layers of 2x lumber to pierce - and the usual bit just won't reach. Plus, my access above is often limited by the roof, so I don't have room for a long bit.

Hopefully you will get the correct answer for this from here and from my concern you should contact with hardware seller who can provide you your necessary item.
