I am looking to buy a portable table saw. I am about to start working
as a carpenter full time and would like to buy my own table saw. I
have always used a Makita 8 1/4 and find that its little safety trigger
that always falls off and its lack of power annoying. I’m debating with
myself about buying a 10″ or an 8 1/4″. Is the exta size worth the extra
cost and weight? What is the best saw for the money?

Delta 10" Contracter's Saw - not too heavy (although could be used in a shop) and not too pricey. I would look at upgrading the rip fence, however, to one that has smooth action and accuracy.
regards, dm
*The Dewalt 10" is the best Portable. The fence is reversable and secures nicely to each track for precision ripping out in the field. The folding stand they offer however is a piece of junk.
*I recently bought a Bosch 4000 with stand. Just finished two decks ripping a large quantity of red cedar. The saw seems to have enough power. I was concerned about fence accuracy and was leaning toward the DW rack and pinion system but the Bosch fence locks tight and checking it with a ruler showed the fence locked square. I checked out both saws side by side at a tool show and the Bosch stand was more sturdy. I bought my saw from Northwest power tool in Seattle via mail order for $449.00, the cheapest price by $50.00 over nearest competitor (Tool Crib)
*'b' What do you think of the Delta UniRip fence?Delta 10" Contractor's Saw on display at the local home center comes with a Delta UniRip fence with top and side T-slo-slots.ocks on one end and lifts off easily. The locking T endIis about 12" wide and seems to lock down with little deflection at the far end. This seems like a pretty good fence for a home shop furniture builder. If you have used the UniRip fence, do you think its worth $200 more for a Delta Unifence or an after market fence?
*In my opinion the Uni Rip fence is a good fence if you used the saw occasionally,in a home shop, or if the saw was used as a jobsite saw.Yes the Unifence is very nuch worth the extra cost as you are not only getting accuracy to 1/64th of an inch; but, you are also getting increased cutting capacity for sheet goods with either the 30",52" or 96" table extensions. Once you've used one, you'll wonder how you ever got along without it.
