Looking for suggestions for good, simple and useful software for home design. This is to be used for my own project and does not need to be professional quality. Specifically, I’m not too interested in interior views and pretty graphics… more so detailed floor plan and elevation.

Billy Bob,
You will find it right next to the unicorn. There are several great packages but they cost. Most of the cheap ones will only do floor plans. If you arent trained and dont use them all the time stick with your drafting stuff.

I use 3D Home Architect Deluxe----www.broderbund.com
It only cost me $59. You can draw detailed floor plans, electrical layouts, foundation layouts, roof design, and then you can view it all in 3D, elevations, cut-through, you can even make a walk-through movie of your design. You can try out the placement of various pieces of furniture in the rooms, landscape the yard and more.. I've tryed several different home design software and this by far is the best for the amateur architect. It's good enough that one of my designs was built from the drawings that came off my printer. Check out their web site for more details.

I've also used the 3D Home architect. For the average guy, it's fine. I've used the drawings to obtain required permits with no problem. The great part is the shallow learning curve. You'll be proficient in no time, plus it's inexpensive.
*I agree. 3D Home Architect Deluxe is the best around for the price. Quick to learn and the features offered.Vince
