With humid conditions (or anywhere for that matter) Plywood is not a recommended substraight for tile or stone, you are asking for trouble. Use the CBU and do it right, or if you want a better solution, contact a tile supplier and get some DITRA made by Schluter, it is perfect for 24″ OC construction, and I believe is the only TCA recommended method, other than a morter bed, and I am not sure a bed is recommended for 24″OC.

I will soon be installing about 500 sf of slate in my new home. I have 3/4 T &G subfloor. Would I be better off with 1/2 CBU or 1/2 ACX underlayment? Oh, by the way, I live in Bristol Bay, Alaska with fairly humid conditions.
*Hi John, nice that you live in Alaska, but what is the spacing of your floor joist?Even on 24 centers, either will be fine.Gabe
*My spacing is 24 OC. If I could do over, I would change to 16. But the costs of construction led me economize. Thanks Gabe.
