I am building a timberframe workshop this spring and need to find some large tools. Specifically, I am looking for 15# beetles – large wood mallets. Any sources? I have been checking flea markets with little success.

Randy, You might try Barley's out of Oregon, they have a mail order catalog that may have what your looking for. Timber frame magazines probably have ad's that may help too. Good Luck, Dave.
*Randy, you can make your own beetle, just take a section of cordwood, drill out a mortise, insert a handle that's dryer than the cordwood, and set it in a warm place to let the hole shrink around the handle. At least that's one way I've heard of it being done.MM
*I just got a sales catalog for Bailey's (I believe that this is what davidmason is referring to?), and they have the big mallets. I'll try to find a website when I get home tonight and post it.
*They're website is http://www.baileys-online.com, and their phone number is 1-800-322-4539.
*Jason, yes I mean't Baileys, not sure where Barley's came from. Probably some sort of microbrewery. Sorry about that. Dave.
*You might also want to try Lee Valley tools. Check http://www.leevalley.com, they seem to have the largest selection of log-building and timber-framing tools in Canada, and what with the exchange rate, you might find yourself a few bargains! My experience with them is their stuff is absolutely great, and their service is equally good. I have nothing to do with them except that I'm a happy customer.
*WoodCraft has some of that kind of stuffhttp://shop.woodcraft.com/Woodcraft/assets/html/homepage.asp
*Hi, we used to call them *persuaders* - and kept an eye open in the bush for trees with stout limbs coming off at around 90 degrees. We trimmed some of the logs to be skidded in with the odd limb remaining in the off chance it would do as a pre-handled persuader. Also in your flea market travels you might pick up a few sledges or mauls, with protection they assemble timber joints quite well- you can direct the blows a bit better. Even on log buildings I'd keep a persuader, a cant hook or peavy, and a couple of log dogs in each corner as it went up. fraternally, dave
