I was just talking to a friend who was looking into a magnetic water softner (basically putting high powered magnets around the water pipe). He heard about them from someone at work. I personally have never heard of such a thing and am skeptical. I was wondering if anyone had any feedback.

When he's done softening his water, he can put them around his vehicle fuel line and double his mileage too.
They work just as well there..........

Do you have these magnets installed or are you just mouthing off. I want to know if they work?
You'll have better luck using sheetrock screws to hang upper cabinets.Do it right, or do it twice.
Just mouthing off, but if you're a little more interested, you could do a search using the button to the left.
They've been discussed before a few times, here's one.

Bottom line, NO, they don't work for softening water, they don't work for increasing fuel milesage either. But Luka has two hidden under his chin to encougare beard growth & they seem to be doing the trick for him.

I thought that was his double chin...old age and all...Do it right, or do it twice.
Hey, just because I'm a grampa, doesn't mean I'm old.
I ain't ever gunna grow up. Or grow old. A good heart embiggins even the smallest person.

Hey hey hey !!!!
No one was supposed to know about those !
Dangit ! Now EVERYONE is going to be growing a beard like mine !!

"Bottom line, NO, they don't work for softening water, they don't work for increasing fuel milesage either."
Well just to let you know that you are WRONG!!!!
Typical narrow minded thinking that is keeping humandity from advance.
I know of the bother in law of the next door neighbor of the sister of the aunt of the kindegarden school teacher of the man whose 3 cousin invented this.
And he is the same person that invented the carburator that will get 200 miles to the gallon of tap water.
Now that works so well that the oil companies got together and bough out all of the rights to it.
You can't buy one now becaue the oil companies bought it up. That PROVES that it works. Why else would the oil companies have bought it up if it did not work.
But I am trying to get in touch with the inventer. There is still a minor design flaw in the magnet water softener.
You see magnetizing comes in two polarities. North pole and south pole. But water comes with them all scrambled up. So half of the water in soften and the other half is turned to concrete.
Now with a few minor adjustments such adding a magnetic alignment filter to align the water before it gets to the magnet and then replacing the bipolar magnets with unipolar magnets this will work like a charm.
It also a free advantage. If you have a leak you just turn the magnets around and it will make the water solid until you can fix the leak.
I have not been able to get intouch with the inventer, yet.
But I did get this email from his business manager.

Greetings,
We need a vender who can offer immediate supply.
I'm offering $5,000. US dollars just for referring a vender which is (Actually RELIABLE in providing the below equipment) Contact details of vender required, including name and phone #. If they turn out to be reliable in supplying the below equipment I'll immediately pay you $5,000. We prefer to work with vender in the Boston/New York area.
1. The mind warper generation 4 Dimensional Warp Generator # 52 4350a
series wrist watch with z60 or better memory adapter. If in stock the
AMD Dimensional Warp Generator module containing the GRC79 induction
motor, two I80200 warp stabilizers, 256GB of SRAM, and two Analog
Devices isolinear modules, This unit also has a menu driven GUI
accessible on the front panel XID display. All in 1 units would be great
if reliable models are available
2. The special 23200 or Acme 5X24 series time transducing capacitor with
built in temporal displacement. Needed with complete
jumper/auxiliary system
3. A reliable crystal Ionizor with unlimited memory backup.
If your vender turns out to be reliable, I owe you $5,000.
Email his details to me at: [email protected]
-------------------------------------
Now as soon as I can some of the time transducing capacitors and I can get intouch with the inventor and get this problem worked out.
Man, I want part of that action! Let me cash in some of my Enron stock and I'll send you some money...Do it right, or do it twice.
Your in!
Since JoeH was such a doubter he is out.
Send small unmarked bills. We don't what the oil companies to be able to trace it.
I agree that the magnet water sofeners are hocum. What puzzles me is, I thought there was some legal ruling on this product in the recent past and that it was proven to be a hoax. And yet, they still advertise locally that they work and are the greatest thing since sliced bread! What gives? Shouldn`t selling these widgets be illegal?

Same magnets on swimming pool plumbing eliminates the need for chemicals! HA
Same smoke and mirrors, different industry.
Always wondered how they would work. My guestimate is that they don't. Of course I haven't seen any real science testing them.
I was thinking how could magnets effect water, a diamagnetic substance, enough to make hardness, minerals dissolved in the water, out. I remember learning about the magnetic properties of water in a chemistry class. Diamagnetic materials are repelled by either pole of a magnet. The effect is quite small. It would take a very large and strong magnet to keep the rain off your head but the effect is not too difficult to prove with simple materials.
If you have a hour and you can do a neat experiment. You need a few materials:
A strong magnet. An Alnico or rare earth magnet about 5/8" in diameter works well. The larger and more powerful the better.
A bit of fine thread. The finer the better.
A 1/4" wood dowel about 2' long or similar.
Grapes or any other stuff you want to check.
Get two similar grapes and impale them on the dowel. Suspend the dowel by way of the tread suspended from a firm surface. A door way works. The dowel needs to be able to turn. Once you have the dowel with the grapes balanced bring the magnet very close to a grape slowly. When the gap gets to about 1/16", possibly a bit closer, grape should move away from the magnet. It doesn't matter which end of the magnet you use.
I once won $10 on this. Things moving away from a magnet is very counter intuitive.
