A client has asked me to build book shelves for the back of her salon. (Actually, it started out with a request for bracket and standard shelves, but since she has a loft with challenging walls (i.e., a metal stud at either end of a 25″ corner), we quickly moved the conversation to boxes.
Of course, over time the project grew (“while we’re at it…”) into shelf units on either side of a door with a shelf unit across the top of a doorway.
I don’t have a shop (yet), so I don’t think I can get the precision I’ll need to build them directly. I’m thinking about ordering tall cabinets without doors from a mail order house and assembling them on-site. I’ve been sketching out the project with the CabParts catalog and then I re-discovered an article on mail order cabinets in the Fine Homebuilding Kitchen & Bath Annual Issue (2003) and now I have 20 other possible sources to consider. Sorting them out will take longer than assembling and installing the cabinets.
Any recommendations, suggestions, tips, etc., would be appreciated.
Thank you.
Neal

I have dealt with Cab Parts for boxes and drawers, Keystone Wood Specialties for fronts, and Conestoga for complete packages. My latest project used Scherr's for everything, and I found them best of all.
Scherr's will do custom work, faceframes, prefinishing, etc., and they can furnish virtually anything in hardware, except for knobs and pulls.
Here is a pic of a bookcase they will deliver soon for me. Three identical KD carcases, faceframes to detail out each end and hide the fasteners, and a big KD faceframe for the front. The shelves are fixed and have hardwood front edges 3/4 thick by 1" high. Everything is primed and ready for finish in the field.
(Sorry about the duplicate pic.)
Micro- What would be the price they'd charge for that unit?
What are the dimensions of the whole bookcase, what's the lead time and how much did it cost?
I went to the web site and carcass pricing is not available from a price list - only drawers and doors.
F.
70 w x 82 h x 10 1/4 d, carcases and shelves of primed MDF, primed poplar trim and face frames. Don't have a breakout on price, unit comes as part of a large order, and discounted accordingly. Your mileage may vary.
Contact them for pricing, and ask for Leon Scherr. I designed this one, and gave him my drawings.
