I have several bags of type ‘M’ mortar left over from building. I tried to sell it on craigslist and nobody wanted to buy. Can I mix it with anything to use it for stepping stones? And if so,what? – gravel and sand?

Offer it up in the free section of Craigslist. That will save you a lot of work and make someone happy too.

mortar is portland and lime, water & sand... the ratio of each determines type S ..M... or O....
concrete is portland/ sand/rock& water
the lime is a plastisizer (sp)
i have played with casting concrete with lime added i get a very smooth finished product with fewer voids... i have some small trim molds that i often fill and cast with left over mortar... they have always turned out fine and very usable...
so i say yes you can use it for casting.... just add sand rock & water

thanks ponytl - I paid 12.00/bag for the type 'M' and I really need the stepping stones so I'm going to try it.Tigger
