Good news that he is going to be OK. The problem is most of us get too complacent with dangerous things. I have found that to be true with table saws, guns and even sky diving. Stuff that scares you at the beginning turns commonplace with experience and you have to sit down and remind yourself every once in a while that loss of fingers or life could be the result of inattention.
