managing favorite/bookmarks

bobl | Posted in General Discussion on February 11, 2003 08:05am

I use IE 5 which shouldn’t matter, unless Netscape has a good thing.

My favorites/bookmarks have gooten unweildy.  Other than going thru them one by one is there a way to help manage them?  I know I have duplicates but finding them isn’t easy.

now using IE... and they handle bookmarks badly, as far as i have been able to determine they just add them to the bottom of the list..very unwieldy

netscape let you edit them , rearrange them and if i remember ... they put the most frequent at the top

or, of course.. i just haven't figured out how to rearrange them in IE

Aha, something I can answer! In IE, just click on "favorites' then click on "organize favorites" and it lets you nest folders organized any ole way you want. Make up folders like "hobbies" or "reference" or "cars" or "naked pics" or whatever, then move your favorites into the folders where they belong. I have hundreds of bookmarks organized this way, in only about 12 main categories and then a bunch of sub-categories. Of course, that could be the librarian thing...."Her own mother lived the latter years of her life in the horrible suspicion that electricity was dripping invisibly all over the house."-????

Organizing bookmarks is one of the thngs I do like about the newer netscapes.

You can make up your folder, then scroll down through the list of bookmarks, and holding down the ctrl key, you can selectively make a list of bookmarks to go into that folder. Then just drag the whole bunch at once into that folder.

The old netscapes made you drag each bookmark individualy. This new way takes about ten to twenty minutes, for what used to be almost an hour and a half of tedious work. (Yes, I let my bookmarks pile up that badly before I organize them, too. LOL)

I use IE (I think 5)  Go up to favorates, there is an organize favorites option, it lets you create foldes and place items in the folders

You can also create folders with in folders

For example I have a folder called school, then a folder for each class, and in a few I have each class divided up.

Take an hour or two depending on how many you bookmarks you might have and have at it,  It took me about 45 minutes to organize mine, but the trick is to keep up with it, I get in the habit of adding them and just letting it go to h*ll again before I sit down and do it again.

I use IE- I think version 5.0 - and it does permit organizing bookmarks or as they call it favorites.

When you are on a site you want to keep, just go up to the top line ( as you can see, my expertise and mastery of terminology is limited) and single click on "Favorites" The first thing you want to do is simply "add" the new site (just follow the instructions). They do just add it to the bottom of the list.

Next though you can click on the "organize"  line which gives you 4 choices. First thing is to create a folder which in effect lets you create sub-categories for your saved sited. Once you have a "folder" created choose the option "move to" and highlight the site you want to move.

I just did this recently as I had about 40 woodworking favorites. It really has made thinks a lot easier .

    Any problems, just post back.

    Good luck

P.S. Just noticed this is probably redundant. Perhaps it will be useful anyway.

Try putting them in a folder. For instance I have a folder for constuction, woodworking and for my business. Hope that gives you an idea.

    I use Netscape.

I create separate folders and sub-folders according to topics like Political, Financial, Forums, Building products, CAD, Misc

    .

In working this in IE 5 I found i can move things around by clicking favorites and then holding down the right button on the favorite i want to move and then move it.  It even comes up where I put it. I can move things around in a folder. and between folders. have to do something else to create a folder.bobl          Volo Non Voleo      Joe's BT Forum cheat sheet
