I recently installed 2 1/4″ #2 Maple flooring, unfinished. I have it sanded and am ready to apply polyurethane. There are rectangular, 1″-1 1/2″ by 2 1/4″ discolorations in the wood about every 12″ on almost every board. I originally thought these were planer marks or something of that nature. I sanded a sample board and found that the discoloration extends through the board. Is this a common grain characteristic? Can I bleach or otherwise treat the floor?

Dave, these could be sticker marks, or some other oddity...
Try sanding a "sample board" or better three assembled side-by-side, and finish with a coat of poly, sand again, and put on a second coat.
Allow to dry, and inspect. Perhaps the color in the #2 grade will obscure these "discolorations"... if not, contact the vendor.
