Are there screwdrivers out there that have a special tip or something to pravent damage to the head of the screw?
I was installing some drapery rods this weekend and the big screws that attached the brackets to the wall were powder coated black to match the rods. It was a shame that as I was screwing them in if the screwdriver slipped a little or even not at all it scraped off a little of the coating and revealed nice shiney silver beneath, which bothers me.
Made me wonder. What are you guys doing in these instances? Anyone have a tip or technique they could share?

you probably already did this, but make sure the screw and the screwdriver are well-matched. In other words, don't use a #2 Phillips bit on a #3 PH screw...
Otherwise, touchup paint. Model paints come in nice little jars so you don't have to haul around a pint or quart can everywhere...
You may even be able to get away with using a Magic Marker if it's up high and not likely to be noticed anyway...
I dont have a answer to the screwdriver problem, although I'd doubt that there is such a thing.
When I'm doing work with black or other dark colored screws I usually keep a magic-marker on hand and touch up with that, works great. Stain markers also work if the screws are bronzed. Find the color that matches.

You need a plastic or even rubber screwdriver. These are available at such stores as Toys-R-Us and others under the "Builder Bill" name or something similar.

Less than 40 days left before the great Seattle-Tacoma earthquake. Another example of FEMA being clueless and doing absolutely nothing to prevent it.

Although I somehow knew I would get that joke. I guess I walked into that one.
Sure, I use a black permanent Sharpie on curtain rod screws when I can't get a black one to match. I can sort of see what I did, but nobody else will know how I customized the zinc screw.

Something else to consider is using an impact driver. They pulse the fastener in at a lower spin rate, making them easier to keep in control. I was surprised to find I could keep a flat head in a screw with an impact driver without camming out.

Buy paint markers to match color of screw heads. Black, white, yelloow.
Paint and presto shizam.
