marrying drywall to horsehair plaster
i have been remodeling older homes with horsehair palster over wooden lath. sometimes i can get a clean edge to butt drywall against and sometimes not. most of the time not. what is the best way to marry the two surfaces together? any tips on repairing small cracks in the plaster that spiral away from my edges.

I use a consoilidator at the cut line of th eplaster first. That can be simply white glue, weldbond, Elmers, whatever. if you have a lot then SW has a special bonding primer for plaster repair.
That seals the sand, hair, and loose junk for the mud to adhere to. I use Durabond for mud, not premixed all purpose.
For surface cracks, the bonding consolidatoor helps if the plaster is well adhered still. If it is loose from the lather, you need more repair, chisling, buttons, etc.

Durabond setting compound. Remove all loose plaster near the repair. I use a diamond wheel in an angle grinder to get a reasonably straight cut line in the plaster. Tent off the area prior to using any circular blade tools, as the dust will fly. Wipe down the dust, sand the plaster if the walls are coated with glossy paint. I use Durabond 90 to give me some extra open time, and paper tape.

Piffin and NickNukEm have nailed it. I use those same techniques.
